What is a VPN and Why You Need One

I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about a VPN, I never thought I would ever need one.  It sounded like something those fast talking hackers use when they are trying to take over the world. Why would a good upstanding citizen need to reroute their internet connection?  Well, I was dead wrong and let me explain why.

First, I wish they would change the definition of a VPN…it doesn’t truly explain the full purpose of what it does.  Here is the technical language.  A virtual private network (VPN) gives you online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection. VPNs mask your internet protocol (IP) address so your online actions are virtually untraceable. Most important, VPN services establish secure and encrypted connections to provide greater privacy than even a secured Wi-Fi hotspot.

Here is a video that understands the technical portions of the VPN service

Sounds like some private eye, Mission Impossible stuff.  I know.  Why would I want to HIDE my identity on my internet?  Well, actually do need a VPN and it’s a crucial part of moving overseas especially to Africa.

Once you are overseas, some websites or banks will block your service because you are accessing them from a foreign address.  For me, my credit union in Texas does not read my app service, website login or ANYTHING I do when I am overseas.  They call it protection.  They block entrace from countries they don’t recognize nor do business in.  don’t want to be overseas and have my identity stolen from the million no good hacking agencies in the world.  So, yes to extra security for me!  As well, a great side effect is Netflix is different in every country and once you get a VPN, it opens up the WORLD servers to you and you can have your website address read from anywhere!  (Italy had some GREAT black movies on Netflix)

Overall, its better to find a VPN package and put it on your computer, phone and any other electronic gadget you use to cruise the internet.  It’s a safety measure worth having.

That means I am blocked from my account and all access.

Until I purchased a VPN service.  Once I purchased a VPN service and was able to install on my computer, I was able to choose what city I wanted my VPN to say I was in.  I choose New York (and sometimes Dallas).  My internet now acts like I am trying to access my accounts from the United States and I am able to access all my account information.  No problem.

There are quite a number of sites and businesses who perform this extra security measure.  Would you believe that Hulu is one?  Hulu is only available for persons in the United States.  However, once I installed that VPN, I was able to watch Hulu again and catch up on some good television shows.

The VPN offers extra security from hackers and the many bots that are trolling the world for information.  I don’t know the science behind it, but I don’t want to be overseas and have my identity stolen from the million no good hacking agencies in the world.  So, yes to extra security for me!  As well, a great side effect is Netflix is different in every country and once you get a VPN, it opens up the WORLD servers to you and you can have your website address read from anywhere!  (Italy had some GREAT black movies on Netflix)
