What About Internet in Rwanda?
We all know that Internet has become such a necessity that people need it everywhere, from homes, to the streets and offices. So it’s no surprise that one of the top questions regarding moving to Rwanda revolves around the internet.
Rwanda is among the top three African countries in terms of internet connectivity, with an ever-growing fiber optic network. As the number of internet users in Rwanda increased by +24% between 2020 and 2021, the internet penetration also stood at 31.4% early 2021.
Canal Box and Liquid Telecom are the top companies in Rwanda playing a key role in driving internet penetration and bridging the digital divide by offering faster, reliable and affordable optic fiber internet connectivity.
According to Canal Box, a first time client will fork out about Rwf65,000 which caters for both router and subscription. The monthly subscription is only Rwf25,000 for 10 Mbps, called “Fiber To The Home” network. Instead of digging the ground for trenches, Canal Box uses a very unique form where their wires are connected to the usual electric transmission poles dotted across the city as a result of environment protection. While this is great, we have to note that some parts of Kigali are not yet covered.

The important thing we need to know is, you can subscribe to Fiber services through any of these providers but you have to be aware of the availability and proximity of their fiber optic cables to where you live. When people to ask which provider is best, the next question will be “Where are you located?” Your location has a lot to do with the quality of your internet.
